Who We Are

About Caldwell First Nation

Point Pelee and Pelee Island are at the heart of Caldwell First Nation's ancestral territory. Since time immemorial, our people have carried the responsibility to care for the lands, waters, air, and natural resources that sustain us.

Our relationship with the land is built on respect, reciprocity, and stewardship. Through our customs and traditions, we continue to preserve, protect, harvest, hunt, and fish in harmony with Mother Earth, ensuring these teachings are carried forward for future generations.

Our Vision:
A community addressing the needs of all age groups based on equality.

We Build:
A strong sovereign First Nation fighting assimilation and respecting other Nations the Creator has placed in our path. Working to build a foundation with other Nations that embraces trust, harmony and honour.

Harmony & Balance:
A community living in harmony with all of creation, maintaining a healthy balance between individual and community needs and working productively with other Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments and communities.

Our Commitment

Caldwell First Nation is committed to strengthening our sovereignty while honouring the relationships we share with other Nations and communities. We strive to build trust, respect, harmony, and collaboration, creating a future grounded in our values and guided by the teachings of our ancestors.

By maintaining a healthy balance between the needs of individuals, our community, and the natural world, we continue to work alongside Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners to create positive and lasting outcomes for generations to come.

Culture and Language

For generations, many Caldwell First Nation citizens were denied the opportunity to learn and practice their culture and language. Without a reserve to call home, our people were dispersed across Turtle Island, making it difficult to maintain cultural connections and pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

Many of the Knowledge Keepers and fluent speakers who carried these teachings have since journeyed to the Spirit World. During a time when Indigenous languages and cultural practices were actively suppressed, many families feared passing these traditions on to their children out of concern for their safety and wellbeing.

Today, the strength and resilience of our people continue to guide us. Caldwell First Nation is committed to revitalizing our culture and language, honouring the wisdom of our ancestors while creating opportunities for future generations to learn, connect, and carry these traditions forward with pride.
